I have a quick question regarding these forums' etiquette.

Let's say I search the forums and find an old topic (no new posts in the last year) that I have something to add to.
Do I
a) start a new thread with my opinion on the subject, despite the fact that there's already an existing thread out there
or
b) reply to the existing thread, despite the fact that I'd be necroposting?

(I did read the FAQ but am not certain what to do since both seem to be okay. Hence the name "etiquette question" and not "guidelines question". Both are acceptable under the guidelines, but which is preferred?).

If you have something to add to the topic, and it's not locked, then by all means go ahead and reply to it. Some moderators may feel the opposite way, however, and ask you to start a new topic. It all depends on a mod's view. But go ahead and do the former.

However, if your post does not contribute to the discussion, such as three word posts of "yeah I agree," then it's just considered necromancy.

It is fine to revive old topics provided you add to the discussion. If you have something to add to an old topic which has already been locked, you can approach a moderator to re-open that topic, provided you have a good reason to do so.
