My friend has a wii. It uses wifi just fine. Our DS's don't work, though. Could anyone give me any reason why? Oh, by the way, I have the old-fashioned origional DS

Could be that you don't have the IP correct - it should be slightly off from the wii's IP (as in, not the same number).

WEP Key could be off (passwords?).

Default Gateway?

Okay then... how do I figure out the WEP key of a LINKSYS router?

  • using the internet explorer (not AOl or MSN or..)but the internet explorer that your computer came with.

  • enter "192.168.1.1" in the website address field. do NOT use www in front.

  • this will bring you to a linksys website.

  • click on wireless

  • then wireless security

  • then you will see the page with the wep key listed.

I believe that is exactly how you do it, I may or may not have missed something.

A detailed post about the error you get would be helpful.

If your Wii can access wifi and your DS cannot, I'm going to say your problem is most likely in the type of wireless security your router uses. Nintendo DS is compatible with only WEP security (the DSi supports WPA), whereas the Wii is fine with WEP, WPA, and WPA2.

It shouldn't be very difficult to change, though I do not own a linksys router, so bear with me. You can log into your router by entering the IP address into a web browser (open command prompt and enter ipconfig, then look under Default Gateway for your active network adapter). The default login information should be printed somewhere on the router itself, though if somebody else living in the house (namely, the person who set it up) has configured it otherwise, it would be good to ask. Now, I'm not too familiar with linksys interfaces, but if you look around for a wireless setup or settings option, you should be able to change the type of security. You'll want WEP security for the DS to work. After changing this, you'll need to reconfigure the Wii and other wireless devices (such as, laptops) that use this router.

Good luck.

DS handhelds don't like it when the SSID isn't broadcast. Don't ask me why, but they just don't. Also, you may want to look into manual configuration of DNS settings. I had to reverse the order of my primary and secondary DNS servers to get my Wii on the wifi; perhaps you may have to do something similar with your DS. Again, a more detailed post of exactly what you're having trouble with would help.

You should be getting some sort of error code from the system; check for that error code on the Nintendo site.

for one it says "enter WEP key" and for another it says "The DS does not support the currently selected router. Go to www.nintendowifi.com or call ***-**** for more information"or something like that. It also says the latter when I try to connect it with my new DS Wifi USB cable.

Then the DS is having issues with your router. As far as I remember, the DS supports standard 802.11b/g routers. I don't think 802.11a or draft-N are supported. Then again, I doubt you have a router that doesn't run b/g. It's probably a setting somewhere that it just doesn't like.

What model router do you have, what strength of encryption (32/64/128-bit WEP, WPA, etc) are you running, and what model DS is it?

That's not the problem. All I need is the WEP key, and then I'm good to go. Oh, and in case you're wondering, I bought a used DS phat. It still works!

Have you actually tried the thing DMM said?

Well, DS phat only works with WEP while DSi works with both WEP and WPA. Did you register settings, key, etc? Anyways, you can buy the wi-fi adapter. My router runs on WPA security, so I bought it.

well, guess what. I got a WIFI USB cable. That didn't work, period. Apparently, it's out of service.

EDIT: :D IT WORKS! Thanks to everyone who helped.
