It looks like you've figured it out...but I'll explain it anyway.

Me, a few threads down wrote:
Once you have your picture, go to the profile thing, near the top of the screen. Down at the bottom of the screen, there will be a place for you to upload your picture from your computer. If I remember correctly, you can no longer upload an image from a URL, although that may have been fixed.

Where exactly did you get your avatar from, a website with a Gallery of avatars, someone's Photobucket Album, or just a generic search with a search engine? Be careful of art theft when using the works of others. Make sure they allow people to use their work, otherwise you have to obtain permission =)
